It's a story for the season, these Angel wings of mine. Some could even say they're the work of the divine.
Made from leftover shelves, old trim, some barnwood and more, my artist friend, Jamie Miller, took the lead role here in bringing this all to life.
There's shades of cobalt blue paired with striking midnight hues — cloudy grays, deep forest greens and soft vanilla whites. Gold and silver glitter grace a few of the pieces too.
“I take a lot of time mentally mapping things out before I do it. Creating the shape, the patina of the wood, the story of the wood,” Jamie says.
A wildly intuitive and boldy creative entrepreneur, Jamie Miller launched Lime Street Creative and Company from her Maple Grove home in 2021 and has been crafting and designing unique artwork ever since.
“For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you with their hands to keep you from striking your foot on a stone” (Psalm 91:11-12 New Living Translation, 1996).
This story began last summer as I was scrolling through my Instagram feed.
I came across the most intriguing pair of Angel wings from Second Hand Rose in Buffalo, Minnesota.
Awe-inspired by this wonderfully raw and rustic depiction, I quickly connected with Jamie to see if she could recreate something similar (but smaller) for my own home.
Before long, she was off and running, eagerly sketching up a drawing for me...
Meanwhile, I had been visiting my parents' country home in central Minnesota when Jamie suggested I collect some old scraps of wood from their place to help with the design.
“To know that it came from your family and I’m using something that you’re already connected to, I kind of use that same energy to create it,” Jamie says.
"I take tons of pictures of what I’m doing too, because I feel like the camera captures something that my eyes don’t see. So, I’ll keep reworking something until I feel like it’s the right way, the right shape," Jamie says.
Here, we see Jamie smoothing out a few rough edges...
She uses her dad’s old chop saw on many of her creative projects too.
“We grew up peeling logs. Working in a construction zone, there were always chainsaws going,” Jamie says, reminiscing about her time helping her parents up at their lake cabin.
Meanwhile, having spent very little time studying Angels myself, I thought it might be wise for me to do some homework on the subject.
"Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it" (Hebrews 13:2).
In the Bible, Angels are described as worshipping beings who fight bold spiritual battles on our behalf.
Looking closely at the photo below, there's a slice of wood that's painted gold. It bares a striking resemblance to that of a golden arrow.
If Angels are like freedom fighters, does this mean they're always flawless in their appearance? Or, do they sometimes carry battle scars?
After digging through some scriptures, I found a few enlightening passages on these spiritual beings.
"I looked up and saw a man dressed in linen clothing, with a belt of pure gold around his waist. His body looked like a dazzling gem. From his face came flashes like lightning, and his eyes were like flaming torches. His arms and feet shone like polished bronze, and his voice was like the roaring of a vast multitude of people." (From Daniel 10:5-6)
From the book of Isaiah:
"Hovering around him (the Lord) were mighty seraphim each with six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with the remaining two they flew. In a great chorus they sang, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty! The whole earth is filled with his glory!" (Isaiah 6:2-3)
The term seraphim, comes from the Hebrew word, seraph, meaning "burning ones" or "fiery ones." These heavenly, magestic beings are specifically mentioned in Isaiah.
And so, it seems, we don't know the full story on these angelic creatures just yet and maybe, it's better this way. Instead, we're left to ponder the mystery of it all, which is a story in itself.
And, let's not forget what we came here for — to celebrate Jamie's handiwork! As you can see, all that sawing and buffing, painting and glittering really paid off.
Meanwhile, the clock is ticking on purchasing your own custom-made set of Angel wings in time for Christmas; though, I'm certain they'll make a lovely gift for yourself or a loved one any time of the year.
